What is a PMA?
A Private Membership Association is a private, contract-based structure. Members join through a voluntary agreement that sets out their rights, obligations, and the internal rules. It is governed by contract and the association’s own documents, not by a government charter.Does a PMA exempt us from taxes, licensing, or other laws?
No. A PMA strengthens the private, contractual side of an activity, but it doesn’t automatically shield anyone from taxes, banking rules, licensing, health and food rules, zoning, or labor laws. Higher-risk activities still need their own compliance review. These include food service, health or counseling services, lodging, animal care, and paid workers.Have questions about your own situation?
